Step back into the Viking Age
Vikingfest has been the largest event at the preHistorisch Dorp for years – and for good reason: it is the ultimate way to discover how the real Vikings lived.
You’ll find yourself right in the middle of Viking life, surrounded by craftspeople, warriors and stories brought to life.
Discover what everyday life looked like centuries ago. Meet Vikings, roll up your sleeves and ask them anything you’d like to know!

Viking shows
But that’s not all… During Vikingfest, you can also enjoy a variety of shows!
Watch fierce battles between Viking warriors, enjoy a musical performance by historical musicians, or perhaps encounter a street theatre performance along the way. Would you rather learn more about combat techniques and early medieval weapons? Join one of the demonstrations and discover how these weapons were used.
Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed to feel completely transported to another time, surrounded by people from the Early Middle Ages.

Activities
During Vikingfest, you can take part in a variety of activities together with the Vikings.
Try your hand at archery near a real Viking farmstead. Or visit a cosy Viking homestead where you can get creative: make fire using historical methods or create your own ring.
Want to take home something truly special? Create your own rune amulet. Runes are an ancient writing system – a historical alphabet of letters and symbols used by the Vikings.

Viking market
During Vikingfest, you’ll also find a large Viking market at the preHistorisch Dorp. Throughout the museum, stalls are filled with traders offering their goods. Among the historical farmhouses, buildings and wooden stalls, you’ll discover a colourful group of merchants and craftspeople, each with their own speciality.
Goods and crafts
Discover completely handmade wooden spoons, pots, bowls and cups. You’ll also find traditional board games, wooden toys and glassware perfect for raising a toast like a real Viking. Looking for something more robust? Watch blacksmiths at work creating knives, axes and other historical tools – fresh from the fire.
DIY
Looking for clothing or textiles? The market offers a wide range of authentic, handwoven fabrics, beautifully dyed linen, wool and yarns. You’ll also find stunning woven bands, nålebinding needles and other materials for craft enthusiasts.
Interior
For your home or camp, you’ll find colourful textile products, sturdy furs from animals such as foxes, rabbits and Icelandic sheep, as well as all kinds of practical accessories. Complete your outfit with jewellery made from bronze, silver or gold and handmade glass beads inspired by historical discoveries.
Demonstrations
Children can marvel at wooden toys, while food lovers can pick up a jar of honey from the beekeeper. There are also plenty of demonstrations of historical crafts, including tablet weaving, leatherworking, pottery and even medieval cooking.
Please note: Most stalls only accept cash payments. There is no ATM on site, so make sure to withdraw cash beforehand.

Viking Academy
Our Vikings are full of knowledge about archaeology, ancient techniques and much more. Ask them anything you’d like to know or join a short lecture about the Early Middle Ages.

Food and drinks
Enjoy food and drinks in the medieval inn or on the Market Square.
You are also welcome to bring your own lunch. Find a spot wherever you like: on a tree trunk, by the water or in the woods.
