Annual Medieval Market

Annual Medieval Market at VONK?
In 2026, there was no Medieval Market at the preHistorisch Dorp due to the opening of VONK. Will the Medieval Market return in 2027? The event calendar for 2027 is currently being put together. As soon as it is available, you will find more information about the Medieval Market here.
Market Day
A medieval market was an important event where people from all over the region travelled to the city to trade, enjoy themselves and meet one another. Countless colourful stalls offered goods such as textiles, spices, handmade jewellery and fresh produce from local farmers. Craftspeople such as blacksmiths, potters and leatherworkers demonstrated their skills, while musicians and acrobats entertained the crowds. At the preHistorisch Dorp, we bring this lively setting to life for two days!

Step into another era
During these two days at our museum, you will feel as though you have travelled back in time, surrounded by medieval residents. On the medieval market square, the scents of the cheesemaker and the inn already greet you, while you hear the sounds of a tuned lyre or the laughter of a travelling jester. In the houses, you can discover all kinds of beautiful goods for trade: from exquisite textiles to fine jewellery. Knights perform spectacular battles and give you a glimpse into their camps. Throughout the museum, you can take part in medieval games such as building a tower, ball throwing, juggling or walking on stilts.
The Medieval Market at the preHistorisch Dorp is one big celebration for all ages!

Historical goods and crafts
During the Medieval Market, wander through the atmospheric stalls and be surprised by a colourful collection of craftspeople, artists and traders from both the Netherlands and abroad.
Discover unique, handmade products inspired by historical examples: from ceramics, leather goods and jewellery to weapons, felt hats, herb mixes and traditional musical instruments. Each item is carefully crafted using medieval techniques. Food lovers will also find plenty to enjoy at the market, with medieval treats such as honey wine, herb cheeses, freshly baked bread and historical sweets.
Many crafts are demonstrated live: watch the blacksmith at work, admire beautiful embroidery or visit the woodworker. The craftspeople are happy to share their knowledge and skills. You can also discover how to shoot a bow, make a pewter badge or create your own leather key ring.
This market is also the perfect place for re-enactors looking to expand their outfits and camps. Whether you are searching for historical furniture, handmade leather accessories, unique medieval clothing, or wool and yarn for your own creations, you will find it all at this market!
Please note: most market stalls only accept cash payments. There is no ATM on site, so make sure to withdraw cash beforehand.

Atmospheric melodies
During the Medieval Market, our musicians ensure a wonderful atmosphere. Historical residents play authentic instruments and sing historical songs for two days. In the past, musicians brought more than just music with them — they also carried stories from other towns and cities. Their songs could be about anything: courtly love, drinking, chivalry, work or simply what had happened that day. A truly special performance guaranteed!

Medieval buildings
At the preHistorisch Dorp, you will find several reconstructions of medieval buildings. As soon as you enter the museum, you step straight into the Middle Ages and experience the urbanisation of the late medieval period. During this time, people began living closer together: incredibly practical, as the city walls provided protection against raiding groups!
Through the Tolhuys, our entrance building and historically also the place where visitors paid their entrance fee, you enter the market square surrounded by various historical buildings. Medieval townspeople earned their living through crafts such as pottery, furniture making, brewing, leatherworking, baking and weaving. Some of these crafts can still be seen on the market square today. For example, the crafts house in our museum is furnished as a weaver’s and carpenter’s home, where you can see these crafts in both the living and working areas.
The blacksmith’s workshop on the same market square is the perfect place for anyone fascinated by the power of fire. Here, the blacksmith creates beautiful metal objects. Do you enjoy working with your hands? Visit the potter’s house and take a seat behind the pottery wheel. On the market square you will also find Herberg Den Bonten Os, where you can enjoy a modern snack while admiring the beautiful stained-glass windows.
Our historical residents are happy to welcome you to the Middle Ages!

Food & drinks
During the Medieval Market, you can visit the medieval inn and its surroundings for food and drinks. You are also welcome to bring your own food into the museum. Choose one of the many tree trunks or other seating areas for your lunch. Sit on the jetty, on the grassy hill near the stalls or in the woods — there are plenty of places to choose from.
